I have been doing scarves
for many years, hand painted with French Dyes, wax resist or batik also, and
Shibori which involves the manipulation of the fabric to create pattern (fabric
can be wrapped, bound, stitched, or otherwise). Mostly, the silk scarves were
purchased and then painted or dyed.
The Infinity scarves that I am currently doing I am sewing myself to make the
circular shape. I have also been knitting some from silk yarn and ribbon which I
dye. I love the circle concept in life - everything goes around. And the
circular scarf is easy to wear, easy to wrap, and depending on the fiber can
almost be a necklace.
After the scarves are sewn, I dye, Shibori them, sometimes discharge them and
overdye. They are all steam set to make them color fast but should be hand
washed or dry cleaned to retain the vibrancy of the color.
It's exciting to see someone wearing a scarf that I've made. Art on fabric has
been created for centuries and I'd like to think that I am contributing a little
to that history when I make a scarf.
